Kick your Imposter Syndrome to the curb and up your coverage!

Uncategorized Jul 06, 2020

Are you familiar with the term "Imposter Syndrome?"

Even if you're not, you've probably experienced it at some point in your life (approx. 70% of people do). But here's a quick refresher either way, courtesy of the Harvard Business Review:

Imposter syndrome can be defined as a collection of feelings of inadequacy that persist despite evident success. 'Imposters' suffer from chronic self-doubt and a sense of intellectual fraudulence that override any feelings of success or external proof of their competence.

And it drives me absolutely bonkers.

Not only do I hate seeing talented women (because - no shock here - that's who it effects more) doubt themselves, but I hate when it creeps up in me too.

Who are you to talk about publicity?

There are way more people out there that can talk about this... what makes me so special?

No one will even like you.

Yeah, super-fun.

But one of the main reasons I hate Imposter Syndrome so much is that it absolutely impedes a lot of the publicity work I do.

I see an amazing media lead come through, or a podcast opportunity pops up, and I pass it along to an amazing entrepreneur I know and they don't respond.

Now of course a lack of time can be a part of this (although when you know how much money publicity can bring to your business you will make the time), but I know that deep down many of them feel they aren't qualified to answer.

And they absolutely are.

They are letting that internal shit-talker run their business - it's the same reason people don't do videos or Facebook Lives or anything that isn't 100% perfect...

So let me tell you a little something that helped me. I was recently listening to the Online Marketing Made Easy podcast with Amy Porterfield and she had a guest on that said something to the effect of you only need to be 10% more knowledgable on a topic than your audience to be an expert.

TEN PERCENT.  ðŸ¤¯ ðŸ¤¯ ðŸ¤¯

I'm definitely 10%+ more knowledgable than my audience on publicity, and I can pretty much guarantee you are at least 10% more knowledgable on your topics as well.

So next time you see an amazing publicity opportunity come your way, PLEASE don't let that dreaded Imposter Syndrome take hold... your business will be glad you did!
